Lift + Specialized Transit

Lift+ is a door-to-door specialized public transportation service [paratransit], which might be for City of Thunder Bay residents who, due to a disability, are unable to use the accessible, conventional bus service for all or part of the trip. (source)


Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility for specialized transit, if approved, falls under one of three categories:

Unconditional – a person with a disability that prevents them from using conventional transit.

Temporary – a person with a temporary disability that is expected to improve, that prevents them from using conventional transit. (example: surgery recovery) This person will be assessed every 6 or 12 months, to ensure that specialized transit service is still required.

Conditional – a person with a disability where certain conditions limit their ability to consistently use conventional transit

Please note that TTY service is only available during regular office hours. Completed applications must be forwarded to Thunder Bay Transit by mail or in-person.

How far in advance should I book my ride?

You may book your trip up to seven days in advance. All trips within the 7 day rolling window are based on availability of service. For example, today is Tuesday. You may request a trip for next Tuesday, right up to today, based on availability. Trips are booked in the order in which they are received, and are on a first call, first schedule basis, subject to availability. Same day service trips are provided to the extent that there is availability.

Does my attendant have to pay?

An attendant required by the registrant for support while traveling on Lift+ due to being unable to travel alone. The registrant must always have support person, if indicated, for travel, otherwise his/her trip will be denied by the Operator. A medical professional must support the need for a support person on the “Application Form for Lift+ Support Person Program.” Use the above contact information to inquire about the support person program.

Additionally, registrants may have a person occasionally travel with them on the service. A registrant must indicate at the time of booking a trip if a companion will be traveling with them. Companion travel may be restricted based on availability of room on the bus. All companions must pay a fare.
