York

York Region is a place where over a million residents and 29,000 businesses (employing almost half a million people) are proud to call home. However, not everyone has a home or struggles to make ends meet. As the cost of living rises, low to moderate income households are having trouble keeping up. The reality is that people in our community need support. York Region is working with various partners to provide more housing options for all residents, despite income levels. York Region includes: Aurora, Richmond Hill, Markham, Newmarket, Vaughn, Georgina, East Gwillimbury, King, and Whitchurch Stouffville. (source)

Is there Special Needs Housing?

There are a number of social housing units that have been modified to accommodate people with disabilities. These modifications may include wheelchair/scooter accessibility, building architecture including the design and shape of rooms and size of doorways, and physical features such as doors, doorknobs and windows. Detailed information about these Modified Accessible Units is available in the listings and descriptions of housing providers.

How long is the wait list?

Yes, waiting times can vary greatly depending on the social housing community you apply to and the size of the unit you require. When you apply for housing your name is added to the waiting list based on your application date. There is a special priority policy for victims of domestic violence who need access to affordable housing to leave an abusive relationship. Because of the long waiting list for social housing, York Region is working hard to increase the supply of affordable housing.
